Muzica melodeath/ folk/ viking metal

Death metalul melodic (sau melodeath) este un subgen al death-metalului, care combina intensitatea si duritatea specifica acestui subgen muzical cu melodicitatea specifica a NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal). Melodeath-ul mai este denumit si Gothenburg metal, cu referire la localitatea suedeza de origine. Pe masura ce a evoluat, acest subgen a adaugat elemente noi: folosirea instrumentelor cu clape, secvente muzicale melodice interpretate la chitara, solo-uri melodice si ocazional chitare acustice, mai frecvent decat death-metalul obisnuit.

Unele formatii de death metal melodic din Peninsula Scandinaviei, dar si din alte tari europene, combina acest gen cu alte genuri : progressive metal (Skyfire), power metal (Children of Bodom), gothic metal (Before the Dawn), symphonic metal (Therion), trash metal (Arch Enemy), groove metal (The Haunted), doom metal (Swallow the Sun), viking metal (Amon Amarth) si folk metal (Ensiferum) si chiar tehno si trance metal (Blood Stain Child, .Silent Descent, Lost Eden, Deadlock).
